Quel Jour Lugubre

It's a sucky day outside - all gloomy and gray, lugubre, as Miles aptly put it. But happy hour is only but a few happy minutes away, and so, after a long hiatus, I'm going to spend those few minutes updating this thing in the best way I know how:

My Bloginality is ENFP!!!

Hmmm, ok, a few more minutes left. I'm freezing to death in the office and my respiratory system is clogging up again.

You are kinda normal. You have your quirks, but overall you are quite normal. You do get a kick out of doing random things once in a while though.

And this was way too tempting to pass up:

Honey:
Recipe for Love
- a pound of hotness

- 1 1/2 cups of wealth

- 2 teaspoons of cuteness
Season and serve.

Two teaspoons of cuteness? Haha, I'd like to add a little more than that, just for the taste of it. Hilarious!

You most resemble Winona Ryder

You are good looking and clever. You are also an active thrill seeker. You have a fairly acceptable personality, except for that pesky theft problem.

Hair Today

So today I finally cut my hair. After almost eight months, I think? I'd never gotten around to the parlor in the hustle of everyday activity, and instead kept it swept up forever in a ponytail, and, in recent days, a labandera's knot (because of sheer length) despite my annoyance at the state of my hair.

But you know that your hair style is starting to define you when the basement parking guard starts identifying you as "Si Atty. Oliveros? Yung mahabang buhok na laging nakatali?" as opposed to "Yung napakagandang abogada sa 607?" And today Miles, who's been telling me to get my hair out if its tail the last few days, said, "Mare, you need a big hair change - I want to see layers, layers, layers!"

Well, I took that opportunity to get off work early and head off to one of those salons-in-a-mall for a real haircut - styled somewhat, but not too difficult to maintain. And the hairdresser who did the honors was thrilled at taking off so much length, though it's not as radical a change as Bonggapang, who called while I was en route to the guillotine, expected ("Change, as in really short hair?"). I don't think I'm ready for that kind of look just yet.

Rhia later asked if there was any symbolism attending this haircutting ceremony. But of course: it symbolizes my impatience and endless irritation with long, unmanageable hair - mine or anyone else's. What a hassle! What a waste of shampoo and conditioner! And what a nice healthy length I have now - out of a ponytail and around my face. But I have to maintain the style with an updated hair dryer and hair iron...should be worth the effort, I hope.

Oh, and I treated myself to another beauty extra: got my eyebrows threaded as well. The things one will do in the name of vanity - the process of being beautiful is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Bibliophile

1. One book that changed your life
Called By Name, by Robert Furey. Next to the Bible, it was a real eye-opener; after reading it, I really began to focus on what I truly was called to do. And then I started doing it.

2. One book you have read more than once
The Bible. Aw, ok, since this is going to be my obvious stock answer (it's my answer to the next question), I'll say Weeds Among The Wheat by Father Thomas Green. I've read many books more than once - Sophie's World, The Alchemist, Edith Hamilton's Mythology, my law textbooks (for Bar review!) - but I find myself reading my books on discernment (like Weeds, Called By Name, and right now Peter Kreeft's Making Choices) over and again (Kreeft for the third time), in different times of my life, and with different realizations each time.

3. One book you would want on a desert island
The Bible. And The Idiot's Guide to Building A Raft.

4. One book that made you laugh
Out loud ha. David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day. Priceless.

5. One book that made you cry
Every single book about or by Mother Teresa. In My Own Words, Loving Jesus, One Heart Full Of Love, etc.

6. One book you wish had been written
The Fool-Proof Guide To The Male Brain

7. One book you wish had never been written
The New Internal Revenue Code of the Philippines.

8. One book you are currently reading
It Must Have Been Something I Ate by Jeffrey Steingarten. Also, for professional purposes, Fernandez' Law of Mass Media, Food Service and Bartending, and A Bride's Book.

9. One book you have been meaning to read
Janis Spindel's Get Serious About Getting Married. Seriously. I was barely two chapters into it when I got too busy doing other stuff. Guess I haven't been taking it as seriously as I should, huh. Give me Sedaris any time.

Growing Up With Francis

It finally hit me, just today.

In my joint Law of Mass Media class of 50-odd junior and senior students, not one single person was born before 1986.

Haaahlelujah. Talk about feeling Jurassic (I suppose these kids remember Jurassic Park, c. 1993 like I remember Star Wars, c. 1977 on a brand-new Betamax right out of the balikbayan box, 'wag ka.)

But sometimes, when all these young adults are in front of you, you forget that you're actually an aging adult. And that you were taking this same college class when most of them were still wetting their nappies and discovering their motor skills.

No wonder they're fascinated by tales of how it was in pre-EDSA UP Diliman (in fairness, we were extremely fortunate freshmen when EDSA 1 shook the country - most of us would have never passed Math 11 otherwise. Er, may I just say that I opted for a numerical grade of 1.75 rather than a mass promotion "P." What - it was the highest Math grade I ever got in my life! And I did my hardworking tutor proud. Er, oops.) How students would smoke in class and get drunk in the corridors and compare battle scars after rallies... And what it was like to go to school with superstellar political personalities the likes of Francis Escudero and Francis Pangilinan - Escudero I've known all my life - although mostly annoyingly, from UPIS' grade school, high school (we were the youngest of UPIS' Class of 85), to UP law school; Pangilinan on the other hand I loved all my life (haay my biggest college crush, Miles will attest to that) - er, este, I managed to catch up, and eventually became friends with, in law school. I remember when he was still a mere mortal who loved Ma Mon Luk, who danced a mean swing, and who I could tease mercilessly about being a "Mega" lawyer. I even wrote and segment-produced his Hoy Gising! legal gigs while he was studying for the Bar. All these Francises I knew in my life (plus DOE Chief Legal Counsel Francis Juan, my best beer buddy and superduper lawyer Francis Rivera, and Francis Badilla who was also once part of UP Law 1994-Section A - hmm, all of whom seem to be fratmen from Alpha Phi Beta, except Pangilinan who's an Upsilon boy).

But of course, the generation gap suddenly became all the more apparent, when, one of my students asked, "E Ma'am, si Francis Magalona?" To which I immediately retorted, "no, he's much older than me, ha!" At which the whole class gasped in disbelief. What?! He is older - much. I had a crush on him in high school, when he was still into the breakdancing thing. He has teenaged children (several, I think) for crying out loud. Perhaps I forgot to tell my class that although I knew Senator Pangilinan way back when, Kiko P was a lot older than I was (part of his long-standing attractiveness). Or perhaps Congressman Escudero looks more mature than FrancisM even if Chiz is only 36/37.

Good grief. Now my age is really showing. Stop me before I start talking about Jojo Alejar or the Gel Boys.

BC Bound - Again

I'm off to BC in a bit. Relatively early start this Friday, although I'd wanted to leave mid-afternoon - but I allowed myself to be tethered to my desk by last-minute favors and other "worthy" distractions. All the better; the later I leave, the less tricycles on the highway. And the faster I'll get through Tarlac.

Still contemplating whether to rush down early Sunday to attend a pre-LSS orientation for our Montalban parents; but if my current mood is any indication, I don't think I'll be doing any rushing this weekend. Been spreading myself too thin lately...I need to drop out of circulation for some major "ME" time.

I gotta chill. And what better place to do so? Catch you on the flip side.

Alternative to Alcohol

I started detoxifying yesterday (Monday) - there's usually too much adrenalin and nervous brain energy left over at the end of the day so a little alcohol is one of the best ways to wind down. But considering I have an addictive personality, that kind of dependence isn't very healthy at all, so I'm laying off those nightcaps for a while. And, in their stead, resorting to other methods to exhaust my hyperactive neurons and consequently allow them to put the rest of my body to sleep. Such as memes to allow me to meme na (pardon the corny pun - spirit of Lex, begone!).

I am tired and need to get to bed but I'm not sleepy yet.
I want to have time to do all the stuff I need to do - or to iron out my schedule.
I wish I could lose some more weight! Tomorrow is another South Beach Diet day - sigh.
I hate slow trucks, tricycles on the highway, typhoons, and all of the above when driving through Tarlac. Grr.
I love it when a plan comes together. Especially a good party plan. :-)
I miss the leisurely pace of BC and fixing the house up there.
I fear losing direction and purpose.
I hear this not-so-funny standup comic going through his routine on Conan.
I wonder what wonders tomorrow will bring. Hehe.
I regret wasting too much time with people who were wasting their time, and mine.
I am so tired of excuses!!
I dance when the occasion calls for it.
I sing quite hoarsely at the moment; a couple of weeks spent battling with laryngitis and various respiratory problems.
I cry very easily, when moved.
I am not likely to take up any kind of competitive sport in the near future...or ever.
I make really good kare-kare.
I write mainly for self-expression. Doing it as a real "job" isn't half as fun.
I confuse myself, most of the time.
I need to take my own advice, especially when it comes to relationships. And I think I need to get myself one of those things too.
I should probably un-busy myself a little bit.
I start really, really slow in the morning.
I finish what I start, most of the time.
I tag YOU, if you're reading this.
